Independent R&D, the largest in China! Shenghong Petrochemical's high-end material PETG plant successfully started operation on the first attempt.

On January 5th, the ceremony for the successful first production of Shenghong Petrochemical's high-end material PETG plant was grandly held in Xuwei New Area, Lianyungang. Xing Zhengjun, Deputy Secretary of the Lianyungang Municipal Party Committee and Mayor, Wei Huaiyu, Vice Chairman of the Municipal Political Consultative Conference and Director of the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Han Shangfu, Member of the Municipal Government Party Group and Secretary-General, Yu Zhi'an, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the Municipal Emergency Management Bureau, Miao Hangan, Chairman of Shenghong Holdings Group, Bai Wei, President of Shenghong Petrochemical Industry Group, Guo Bangli, General Manager of Jiangsu Honggang Petrochemical Co., Ltd., and other leaders and guests attended the event. Zhao Houfeng, Director of the Xuwei New Area Management Committee and Deputy Secretary of the Party Working Committee, presided over the ceremony. 
 
The project was independently developed and innovatively designed by Shenghong Petrochemical, with 13 patents applied for around core technologies, all of which have independent intellectual property rights. The plant has a capacity of 130,000 tons/year, using PTA from Honggang Petrochemical and ethylene glycol from Shenghong Refining & Chemical as raw materials, to produce high value-added, high-end new material products through chain extension, with an annual sales revenue target of over 2 billion yuan. With the successful start of the project, Shenghong Petrochemical's total PETG production capacity ranks first in China.
 
 
PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified, cyclohexanedimethanol) is synthesized by condensation polymerization of monomers such as PTA (purified terephthalic acid), EG (ethylene glycol), and CHDM (cyclohexanedimethanol). Compared with traditional PC materials, PETG has excellent thermal processing properties, weather resistance, chemical resistance, high transparency, and is free of bisphenol A, making it non-toxic and harmless to humans and the environment. It has broad development prospects in fields such as special containers, high-end films, pharmaceuticals, new sheet materials, and environmentally friendly building materials.
 
Currently, with the increasing demand driven by global environmental and health policy requirements, the PETG industry is experiencing tremendous development opportunities. Data shows that the global PETG market size exceeded 13 billion in 2023 and is expected to exceed 20 billion by 2030. However, due to high industry barriers, domestic mainstream PETG industrial production technology and series products have long been controlled by foreign companies, with a market dependence of over 80%. With the rapid development of China's PETG market, core production technology applications and research and development related to it will undoubtedly become the focus of industry attention. Through persistent technological innovation, Shenghong Petrochemical has successfully mastered core key technologies in catalysts, polymerization processes, product performance optimization, formula development, etc., completely breaking the foreign technological monopoly and further innovating and upgrading. The by-products of the process are lower, energy utilization rate is higher, and the technology has reached the international leading level.
 
 
The PETG project of Shenghong Petrochemical complies with the 2021 national key project special "Advanced Structure and Composite Materials" and the "14th Five-Year Plan" for the high-end development of the chemical industry in Jiangsu Province. Against the backdrop of national material safety, on the one hand, this project will significantly increase the domestic self-sufficiency rate of PETG products from less than 20% to over 50%, greatly alleviating the vigorous demand in the domestic market. On the other hand, it will further lead and promote related industries to accelerate the pace of high-end transformation, helping the country's key material industries achieve independent control.
 
The main raw materials of the PETG plant put into operation this time, such as PTA and EG, are from the group's upstream plants, realizing the key nodes of the industry chain from aromatics to PTA, and then to high-end ester-based new materials from the product end, achieving a closed loop from basic raw materials to high-end new materials. The efficient integration of upstream and downstream layout has significant cost and competitive advantages; while refining products, it also greatly improves the value chain, opens up ideas for optimizing the group's industrial structure, increasing product types, and broadening sales channels, greatly enhancing the enterprise's ability to resist risks. With the continuous deepening of technological research and development and the maturity of production technology, a new industrial growth pole of the group will be formed rapidly.
